Leverburgh WiFi Network - Network Storage

One of the advantages of broadband is that you can download files much faster. Unfortunately this also means that as companies see the uptake of broadband increasing they are increasing the size of their file downloads - especially for software updates. It is becoming increasingly common for software updates to be near the 100mb. For dial-up users on the Leverburgh exchange this is impossible for several reasons, the main 2 being that it would take 10 hours but more alarmingly the files are often on servers that do not support "resume". As dial-up usually cuts off after 2 hours the maximum on update our exchange can handle is around 20mb.

Using a shared folder on the network together with our "file download booking service" we can download updates and leave them available for all users. This saves bandwidth (as the file only needs to be downloaded onece) but also it means that when you download the file yourself you will get it at the full 2mb speed (often update servers are throttled so that they run at a fixed speed or are very busy). As our servers are running 24/7 it makes no difference if we set a file to download!

Allowing 1Gig of storage space for each user we can set up password protected areas for each user so that they can use this space for their downloads or for security back-ups of important data - or even for private filesharing. There are many uses but these would be the most common.

Placing back-ups of important data in these secure folders is often a good idea. There are many occassions when the data that should be backed up changes regularly. Writing this to CD or DVD every day or every week would be a nuisance and most would do this monthly. However placing this data into your folder on the network could make all the difference ith the worst happened to your computer or you had a "slip of the mouse".

Please note, however, that Leverburgh WiFi Network provides this service as a back-up to YOUR back-up regime and should not be treated as your primary back-up medium. Leverburgh WiFi Network can not be held responsible for any data loss - plus all the other usual silly get-out clauses ;-)
